To supplement the facility’s preexisting structural box gutters and protect the historic building’s integrity from severe storm runoffs, our team engineered and installed 8 new high-capacity commercial roof drains. Working within the courthouse’s complex, historical attic timber framing network, we routed code-compliant solid core schedule 40 PVC piping assemblies. The installation required precise mechanical engineering, using structural pipe straps, heavy wood blocking supports, and custom offset configurations to navigate historic brick chimneys and successfully tie the new gravity drain lines directly into the building’s core vertical cast iron drainage stack loops. A fascinating highlight of navigating this structural attic was working alongside the historic timber rafters, including the original wood beam where former President John F. Kennedy famously wrote his initials in chalk.
